For those who want the most out of your radar subscription, a basic knowledge of radar interpretation is essential. Pretty colors mean nothing when you need to figure out what is coming at you or an area of concern. Here are some helpful links to get you started.

  Its probably a long shot to ask this, but what about something that directly corresponds to the data that allisonhouse provides? For example, what would I be looking for if the instability was this.... or if the cap was this...... just something basic for us "newbies" Whats the parameters "recipe" of good thunderstorms? dew point= instability= etc.

  Good questions! Unfortunately, some of that level of detail is beyond Allisonhouse and more in line with a level 300 meteorology course.

  For example, you can all the CAPE in the world, but if you have a cap, it means nothing.

  So without going the college enrollment route, Tim Vasquez has an excellent book on weather and forecasting for the newbie that has generated great reviews over the years (and rightly so---he's a good forecaster!). He has a major update to it coming up in December. You can find that here on the top right of this webpage

  Additionally, Tyler plans also to work on some materials to be available next spring. It will be basic, but if you want to go above and beyond the nowcasting tools we offer, then that book is for you. A well spent $30 for the Christmas tree. :-)
